The people of Gibeon heard that the cities of Jericho and Ai were destroyed by the Israelites and that the God of the Israelites empowered them to fight their battles. They were, also, aware that a half dozen kings were combining to battle against the Israelites. The Gibeonites chose to make peace with the Israelites; but to make sure they were accepted, they deceived the Israelites into thinking they had travelled a long distance by taking moldy bread, worn sandals and old clothing.
