The king of Jerusalem was aware that the Israelites had destroyed Jericho and Ai and then the Gibeonites had made peace with the Israelites. He convinced four other Amorite kings that they should attack Gibeon for making a treaty with the Israelites.
The Gibeonites sent word to Joshua, saying, “Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us!” With God’s approval, the Israelites took the Amorites by surprise. God threw them into confusion and as they fled, He hurled large hailstones down on them so that more were killed by hailstones than by the sword.
