As Samuel grew old, he appointed his two sons as judges; however, they accepted bribes and perverted justice. So, the elders came to Samuel and demanded a king. This displeased Samuel; so he prayed to God.
God told Samuel, “It’s not you they are rejecting, it’s Me. Warn them what having a king will be like.” When Samuel provided a list of claims a king would make, which included: Taking their sons to support a standing army, others to plow his fields and reap his harvest; taking their daughters to be cooks and bakers; taking fields and vineyards and giving them to his attendants; taking a tenth of their flocks; and eventually they would become the king’s slaves. None of this deterred them from continuing to demand a king.
God identified, to Samuel that the King was to be a man named Saul. [Reflection based on the Bible Reference – 1 Samuel 8:1-9:17]
