King Nahash, an Ammonite, prepared to attack the city of Japesh. The men of Japesh did not want to battle the Ammonites; so, they petitioned King Nahash to make a treaty in which Japesh would be subject to King Nahash. Controlling Japesh was not enough for King Nahash; he wanted to humiliate the Israelites. He said he would agree to a treaty only if the Israelites would agree to have their right eye gouged out, as a sign of disgrace.
When Saul came in from the field and saw everybody weeping, he wanted to know what was wrong. When he heard the news, the Spirit of God came upon him and he led the Israelites to victory against the Ammonites. [Reflection based on the Bible Reference – 1 Samuel 11:1-11]
