Jonathan was willing to fight for Israel; but, only with God’s approval. His father, King Saul, had positioned what was left of his fighting force (about six hundred men) not far from the Philistine encampment.
Jonathan and his armor-bearer, unknown to King Saul, slipped away to scout a strategic Philistine outpost at a mountain pass. Jonathan told his armor-bearer, God would let them know what to do. As a result, God fought the battle for the Israelites. He created such confusion among the Philistines that they began fighting among themselves.
