Jonathan loved David as a brother and he wanted David to continue playing the lyre for his father, King Saul. When David told Jonathan that Saul wanted to kill him, Jonathan found this difficult to believe. He said, “My father tells me everything. It can’t be so.”
The next day would be the beginning of a New Moon feast. There would be a seat at the table reserved for David. He planned to not attend the dinner. This would provide an opportunity for Jonathan to observe his father’s reaction to David’s absence. By the second day, Saul was so furious about David’s absence and his perception that Jonathan was covering for David that in a fit of rage he hurled a spear at Jonathan. With this, Jonathan knew that David’s life was in danger and he needed to warn him. [Reflection based on the Bible Reference – 1 Samuel 20:1-42]
