After years of shepherding the flocks of his father-in-law, Jethro, Moses was on the far side of the wilderness, near the mountain of Horeb, when he saw a bush that was burning; but was not consumed. Out of curiosity he approached the bush, to get a better look. As he drew nearer, God spoke to him and told him he was on holy ground. Following this, God instructed Moses that He wanted Moses to lead the Israelites, who were in bondage (treated as slaves) out of Egypt, into a “Promised Land” (Canaan).
While Moses was fearful of Pharaoh (Moses had killed an Egyptian who was beating an Israelite) and offered an excuse that he was not a good speaker, God assured Moses that He would empower him for the task.
