God saw that Moses was a humble man as he performed his duties of leading the Israelites from Egypt through the wanderings in the wilderness. Miriam and Aaron (the sister and brother of Moses) were critical of Moses’ choice of a wife. The criticism of their brother extended to the special relationship between God and Moses…to the point of them asking, “Does God speak only to Moses? What about us?”
Miriam and Aaron chose poorly in questioning God’s relationship with Moses. The consequences was that Miriam’s skin turned white (as in leprosy). Aaron pleaded with Moses to ask God to restore Miriam’s health. God responded to Moses that Miriam should remain outside the camp for five days; at which time her health was restored. [Numbers: 12:1-15]
