Among the enemies of the construction of a temple in Jerusalem were a group of Samaritans with an Assyrian background. At first they offered to help with the building; however, the sincerity of this offer is questionable because when their offer was declined, they set about actively working against the rebuilding project by bribing officials to work against the construction.
