God had made it clear that he was displeased with Saul’s attitude and disobedience. He said to Samuel, “I’m sending you to Bethlehem. I have chosen one of the sons of Jesse to be the king. Take a heifer along for a sacrifice and ask Jesse to join you; I’ll show you what to do. You are to anoint the one I indicate.”
One by one, Samuel had Jesse’s sons pass before him…seven of them; but God did not select any of them. “Are these all the sons you have? Samuel asked. “There is still the youngest son; but, he is in the fields tending the sheep,” Jesse replied.
