While in the service of the king, Asenath, the daughter of an Egyptian priest became Joseph’s wife. During the seven year period of plentiful harvests, two sons were born. The first son Joseph named Manasseh, saying, “It is because God has made me forget all my trouble.” The second son he named Ephraim, saying, “It is because God has made me fruitful in the land of my suffering.” Each of these sons would be blessed, by God, and their descendants would become important in the nation building of Israel.
